Hair loss can affect men, women and children. Today more women than ever are experiencing hair loss. Hair loss in women can effect their self esteem the most. Since ancient times, women have taken pride in their crowning glory and, therefore, it is natural that they gets worked up when there is a threat to these lovely tresses. A few strands of hair in the comb can become the matter of concern. However, before you hit panic button, you should be aware that hair fall may be part of the hair cycle or a result of improper hair care.
Hair follicle is the place from where each strand grows. Here the new cells are produced and added on to the root causing the hair to grow. On an average, hair grows at half an inch per month. Hair grows more quickly in summer and between the ages of 16-24. The normal life span of each hair (a single strand) is around seven years. It is then replaced by a new one. But when the rate of hair fall overtakes the rate of replacement, or hair loss becomes obvious.
Causes of Hair Loss in Women
There are several causes for hair loss. According to a new study, the causes for hair loss in women may be a lot different from that of men. Women, generally, lose about 20% of their hair between the age of 40 – 50. It is at a slower rate when compared to men. In men, the hereditary pattern plays a vital role in hair fall. The most common cause in women is actually hormonal. Changes in hormone levels, such as those seen with menopause, pregnancy, thyroid conditions, or the stopping or starting of birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy, can cause temporary hair loss in women. Female pattern baldness is a hereditary condition that results from a reaction to testosterone in the body. When the testosterone is converted into DHT the compound attacks hair follicles and causes baldness.
Stress and some illnesses such as anemia and infections, can also lead to hair loss. Scalp diseases from bacterial or fungal infection can also lead to hair loss. Dietary deficiencies and stress are the major lifestyle causes of hair loss in women. Over and improper use of hair styling and coloring products can cause Alopecia. So can aggressive brushing, shampooing and the wearing of tight hairstyles like braids or ponytails.
Prevent Hair Loss
If you are experiencing hair loss, have a hair analysis done to uncover any nutritional deficiencies or toxic metal contamination. As hair is formed, available minerals and amino acids circulating in the blood are laid down in the hair. A hair analysis can therefore provide a picture of your mineral status and pick up any exposure to toxic metals. You should also consult your physician to check for an underlying health problem, such as hypothyroidism or infection. Here are few tips to prevent hair loss in women:
- Pay less attention to your hair. Avoid too much experiment with hair to look good! Coloring or perming your hair often can damage it. It is advisable not to perm and color hair the same day.
- Too much blow drying or hot curling can damage your hair
- Always wear a bathing cap while swimming and shampoo your hair immediately afterwards.- Avoid combing or brushing wet hair as they are more fragile when wet.
- Too much of alcohol is bad for health of hair. Similarly, hair products that contain alcohol can make hair dry, brittle and prone to breakage. Therefore, avoid them.
- Healthy hair is reflection of your well-being. And healthy people eat healthy diet. Crash diets aren’t good for your health or your hair. Similarly, quick weight loss plans, especially low
-protein diets, can cause hair loss. If you are dieting, take a multivitamin supplement.

Natural Remedies for Hair Loss
Here is a natural home remedy which can combat hair loss: Take 2-teaspoons of castor oil, 2 teaspoons each of amla and shikakai powder, powdered fenugreek (methi) seeds, 2 teaspoons of neem paste and 2 eggs. Apply the paste to the scalp and hair and leave it on for 45 minutes. Wash off, with a mild shampoo.
Dandruff may also be a factor in hair loss. To get rid of dandruff, massage hair with warm coconut oil and apply the juice of one lemon to the scalp. Grind 550 grams of methi seeds. Mix in two eggs and apply on the scalp. Leave on for 30 minutes, shampoo with an anti-dandruff shampoo. For a final rinse, take warm water and add juice of one lemon to it. Do this twice a week to wash the hair off dandruff.
Reverse or Prevent Hair Loss with a Healthy Diet
Eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables and low in starch may slow down the hair loss process. A wholesome diet, rich in silica, calcium and iron, will help reduce or prevent hair loss. Green, leafy vegetables, especially sea vegetables, are good mineral sources. Raw oats provide silica. Dried fruits and cherry juice are rich sources of iron.
For women, thinning hair or hair loss can be a sign of a problem in the gastrointestinal tract. It could be a sign of insufficient stomach acids; It could also mean a deficiency of protein, zinc and other nutrients. Anemia is one of the most frequent causes of hair loss. Eat plenty of iron-rich foods, like liver (Avoid if you are pregnant) and other organ meat, whole grain cereals, dark green leafy vegetables, eggs, dates, and raisins.
Since, hair is comprised mostly of protein, one should adhere to a diet rich in protein to encourage hair growth.
Studies have found that soy protein reinforces hair and stimulates its growth by 15 percent. Tofu and soy milk are good sources of soy protein.
Green, leafy vegetables, fresh fruit salads, coconut, lean meat, poultry, fish, eggs, nuts, yoghurt, almonds and cottage cheese give hair strength and a natural shine. Drink at least eight glasses of water, herbal teas and unsweetened fruit juice. Go easy on tea and coffee.
Exercise Regularly for Healthy Hair
Regular exercise stimulates the circulatory system, encouraging a healthy blood supply to all cells, nourishing and helping in hair regeneration and repair. Massaging scalp with finger tips also helps in stimulating hair follicles.
